Bear Repellant Pepper Spray
Both Guard Alaska* Bear Repellant and Mace* Bear Spray are registerd with the EPA for use against bears.
There is a special formula for this and ordinary pepper spray is not recommended.

Spokeswoman Heidi Godwin said in a news release,
"The proper use of bear pepper spray will reduce human injuries caused by bears, reduce the number of grizzly bears killed in self-defense, and help promote the recovery and survival of the grizzly bear."
A rifle apparently doesn’t work as well as a cannister of red pepper spray. Dr. Smith and colleagues report in the Journal of Wildlife Management that in encounters during the past three decades where humans used the spray against black, brown and polar bears, the spray stopped the bears’ “undesirable behavior” more than 90 percent of the time — and in none of the incidents did any person suffer serious injury.
